Reds walk it off in dramatic fashion in Joey Votto’s 2,000th career game

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds ended the month of June like they have done so many times, winning in dramatic comeback fashion.

Spencer Steer hit a two-run home run with two outs in the 11th inning as the Reds beat the San Diego Padres, 7-5, Friday night at Great American Ball Park.

The game also marked the 2,000th game played for Joey Votto as a Cincinnati Red.

He is now fifth all-time in games played in team history.

It was tied at 1-1 in the seventh when Tyler Stephenson’s home run put the Reds ahead, 2-1.

The Padres had runners on second and third with one out in the ninth against Cincinnati closer Alexis Diaz. Matt Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. It was Diaz’s first blown save in 28 chances.

San Diego scored twice in the 10th on a Fernando Tatis, Jr. RBI single and an RBI double by Juan Soto to take a 6-4 advantage.

With two outs in their half of the tenth, Matt McClain homered to center to tie it at 6-6 to keep the Reds Alive.

In the 11th inning, Gary Sanchez’s single drove in Xander Bogaerts, and San Diego led, 5-4.

Cincinnati began their half of the 11th with Jonathan India as the designated runner on second and Elly De La Cruz’s double tied it at 5-5. With two outs, Steer drove a 2-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for the win.

Daniel Duarte got the win in relief for the Reds while Drew Carlton was the loser for San Diego.

The same two teams are in action Saturday and Sunday at Great American Ball Park.

First pitch for both games is at 1:40 p.m.
